Doggy visitors bring joy to dementia residents

Carers and support staff Wentworth Court Nursing Home brought their dogs to work so residents living with dementia could enjoy some canine company for International Dog Day (on August 26).

Residents living at the dementia-specialist home on Village Road, Cheltenham enjoyed a pet parade in the home’s garden and petting their new furry friends.

Wellbeing Manager, Suzanne Meadows said: “Many of our residents get great joy and comfort from the sensory experience of stroking and cuddling animals, particularly dogs. Lots have had dogs as pets and today helped to bring back positive memories and stimulate conversation.”

As well as meeting dogs (and a kitten for those who prefer cats!) the residents enjoyed afternoon tea in the home’s gardens, taking part in a dog breed quiz, and a soundtrack of doggy-themed songs.

Prior to Covid-19, Wentworth Court hosted an annual pet show, attended by residents’ families and their animals. The team hopes to be able to fully open for family and community engagement events in the near future.
